Creating Biology Success

Rob is an experienced Biology teacher with over 16 years of classroom experience, specialising in GCSE and A-Level Biology. Having spent the majority of his career teaching at a highly successful boys’ grammar school, he is known for making complex biological concepts accessible through clear explanations, memorable analogies and a patient, supportive teaching style.

Alongside his extensive classroom experience, Rob brings a deep understanding of exam preparation and student success. His ability to break difficult topics down into manageable concepts and then rebuild them into a complete understanding helps students develop both confidence and long-term mastery of the subject.

Rob began his teaching career in a comprehensive school, teaching students of all abilities across the full range of Science subjects. This early experience gave him a strong foundation in adapting explanations and teaching approaches to suit different learners and learning styles.

Since 2010, he has taught at a boys’ grammar school where he specialises in Biology. Over the past 16 years, he has taught General Science at Key Stage 3, GCSE Biology and A-Level Biology, supporting hundreds of students through public examinations and university applications.

In addition to his classroom teaching, Rob has held a number of leadership responsibilities, including serving as a Pastoral Leader and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL). He has extensive experience supporting ambitious students applying for competitive university courses, including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Oxbridge programmes.

Rob also has experience as an A-Level examiner, providing valuable insight into how students are assessed and the common mistakes that can prevent otherwise capable students from achieving their potential.

Teaching Style

Rob’s teaching philosophy centres around understanding rather than memorisation. He believes that once students understand the core concepts that underpin a topic, the details become far easier to remember and apply.

His lessons focus on breaking topics down into their fundamental ideas and key terminology before gradually rebuilding them into a complete picture. He is particularly known for using memorable analogies to help students visualise and understand difficult biological processes.

Rob also takes a highly practical approach to exam preparation. Each year, he completes A-Level examination papers himself before reviewing mark schemes and examiner reports. This allows him to understand first-hand which questions students are likely to find challenging and develop effective strategies to help them overcome common difficulties with exam technique.

A particular strength of Rob’s teaching is his ability to link topics together and interleave concepts across different areas of Biology. Students often discover that topics they initially viewed as separate are built on the same underlying principles, helping them develop a deeper and more connected understanding of the subject.

What Students Find Helpful

Students frequently describe Rob as patient, approachable and exceptionally knowledgeable. They value his willingness to answer even the most challenging questions and his ability to explain difficult concepts in multiple ways until they make sense.

Many students particularly appreciate his use of analogies and real-world examples, which help transform abstract biological concepts into ideas they can understand and remember. His ability to make connections between different topics also helps students build confidence when applying their knowledge to unfamiliar exam questions.

Rob has particular expertise and enthusiasm for plant biology, ecology, applied biochemistry, physiology and anatomy, and enjoys helping students develop a genuine appreciation for the complexity and interconnectedness of living systems.

Outside of Academics

Outside teaching, Rob is an enthusiastic endurance athlete and is currently training for an ultramarathon. He is also a keen apiarist, keeps chickens and is a passionate animal lover. Alongside his dog Moose, he admits that owning a pet cow remains high on his wish list.

Rob enjoys travelling and exploring new places whenever possible.

His favourite enzyme is luciferase, responsible for the glow seen in bioluminescent organisms.

His favourite biology fact is that the eyes have their own isolated immune system. If the body’s main immune system were ever to recognise the tissues of the eye as foreign, it could mistakenly attack them and blind you.
