Teaching & Mentoring Style

Christian’s mentoring focuses on the gap between knowing the content and writing an answer that gets the marks. Many students can describe a political concept accurately, yet lose marks because their essays lack a clear line of argument or fail to reach a substantiated judgement.

Sessions work through essay planning, paragraph structure, use of evidence and the balance between description and evaluation. He models how to build an argument from the first sentence, then works with students to apply the same approach to their own questions.

His Law degree involves constant essay writing under time pressure and he draws directly on that experience to help students write more precisely and argue more decisively.

What Students Find Helpful

Students value the detailed feedback Christian gives on written work, with specific comments on what would have put a paragraph into a higher band rather than general praise.

Having sat the same exams recently, he understands the pressures of Year 12 and 13 and can talk realistically about workload, revision and applications. Students considering Law or Politics at university also benefit from his insight into the Oxford application process.
